Virginia’s elementary and secondary schools offer a wealth of opportunity and diverse learning experiences for students. Well over one million students are enrolled in Virginia’s 2,000 public elementary, middle, and high schools, and centers of learning. Public high schools in Virginia graduate about 80,000 students annually. Nearly 80 percent of these graduates will continue to a two- or four-year degree program or have other continuing education plans.
- In May 2008, nine Virginia high schools were cited
by The Washington Post as being among the 100 best public schools
in the country, tying for fourth in the nation with number of schools recognized
in the top 100.
- In the most recent rankings of Expansion Management
Magazine, six school districts in Virginia were listed as Gold Medal
Districts and seven received the Blue Medal rating.
- In 2007 the number of Virginia public school students taking the Advanced Placement (AP) exam increased again by almost 11 percent and Virginia’s 11th and 12th graders at both, public and private institutions, are taking the fifth most AP exams in the nation.
- Virginia has the third most schools with International Baccalaureate programs in the United States, and in 2006, the Commonwealth had the third highest number of diplomas awarded in the nation.
- Private Schooling: the Commonwealth offers a wide-variety of school options at over 290 accredited institutions.
- With six military schools in the Commonwealth, Virginia has the largest concentration of military schools in the nation.
- Career and Technical Education (CTE) in Virginia annually serves more than 550,000 secondary students in its career and technical courses and programs in high schools.
- Newsweek’s 2008
Top U.S. High Schools List cites 86 Virginia high-schools among the
best in the nation.
