Community Colleges

The Virginia Community College System, comprised of 23 community colleges, located on 40 campuses around the state, provides academic, occupational and technical training programs, many of which are designed specifically to meet the needs of nearby businesses and industries.

In the 2011-2012 academic year, Virginia's community colleges awarded over 31,300 degrees, diplomas and certificates. Increasingly, community colleges are developing transfer agreements with four-year institutions, whereby students earn the first two years of a bachelor’s degree at a community college. In 2011, the community colleges served over 11,000 employers and more than 288,800 individuals in credit courses and over 87,100 individuals in customized workforce training and continuing education courses, contributing substantially to the economic development of their service regions.
