COLLEGE DESCRIPTION:
Thomas Nelson Community College is located in Virginia’s Hampton Roads Region and serves the residents of the cities of Williamsburg, Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson and the counties of James City and York.

SUPERLATIVES/RECENT ACCOLADES:
  • TNCC leads a successful Employment and Training Alliance Pipeline for Canon Virginia’s expansion that will provide 880 skilled technicians in 4 years. At the end of the first year, 107 individuals had been trained and are employed full-time at Canon, 81 of these with Career Studies Certificates in engineering technology.
  • TNCC led a successful $2 million U.S. Department of Labor employment and training grant with $2 million in private sector match that recruited, assessed, trained and placed 4,758 individuals in jobs with 72 manufacturers in Hampton Roads, coordinating workforce boards, one stops, employment offices and four community colleges.
  • TNCC operates a $960,000 contract as part of a $5 million Workforce Innovations in the Regional Economic Development (WIRED) grant to work with businesses to develop and deliver modeling and simulation technicians, and to provide training for the Transportation, Warehousing and Distribution sector.
  • TNCC is the lead operator of the regions Workforce Investment Act One-Stop Center, in partnership with the Virginia Employment Commission and the New Horizons Regional Education Center, providing over 30,000 individuals a year with employment and training services.
  • TNCC opened a new Historic Triangle Campus in Williamsburg in July 2009. The new 120,000 square-foot building serves the postsecondary needs of the communities and businesses of the Upper Peninsula.
  • TNCC works with companies to develop and deliver customized credit and non-credit industry and professional programs in such specialized areas as advanced engineering technology, materials science, dental hygiene, modeling and simulation.
  • The college established a regional skills certification center at the PWDC that offers in excess of 300 national and professional certification exams.
  • TNCC received a new award of $2 million in January 2009 from the U.S. Department of Labor to support manufacturing on the Virginia Peninsula though partnerships with the public schools, the workforce board, and the Peninsula Manufacturing Experts Panel to produce 198 welders, 48 CNC machinists and 12 Precision Production Technicians to national standards in three years.
  • TNCC has opened a state of the art precision welding lab, at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center, with support from grants, and cash and in-kind donations from Alcoa and Northrop Grumman, Miller Electric and AirGas National Welders and others.
  • TNCC is now an approved apprenticeship instruction site recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor. Current apprenticeships are ongoing with Northrop Grumman, Liebherr, Owens and others. TNCC works with companies to create apprenticeships in any of 300 state approved programs ranging from day care worker to welder.

CURRENT INDUSTRY TRAINING PROGRAMS:
Workforce Development currently offers the following (on- and off-campus) customized Career Studies Certificates: Business Principles, Child Development, Corporate Relations, Fundamentals of Organizational Leadership, and the following degree programs, A.A.S. Mechanical Engineering Technology, A.A.S. in Business Administration, , A.A.S. Electronics Technology with a Specialization in Electrical Engineering Technology.

CURRENT INDUSTRIES SERVED:
Manufacturing, distribution, social services, education, fire & EMT departments, health care, military, technology, hospitality and tourism, the fitness industry, federal, state and local government , and others as requested.

Through a partnership with seven local cities and counties the Peninsula Workforce Development Center (PWDC) opened in 2001 and the Discovery Center in 2009, serving businesses of all sizes and types in Hampton Roads.

Additionally, several prominent business partnerships have formed as a result: Advex, Continental AG, Northrop Grumman Newport News, NASA Langley, Catalina Cylinders, Liebherr, Ferguson Enterprises, Canon Virginia, Howmet Castings, Esterline Pressure Systems, AVID Medical, W.M. Jordan, Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, and others.

RESOURCES FOR TRAINING PURPOSES:
Thomas Nelson Workforce Development prides itself in the services available to business and industry. The Peninsula Workforce Development Center makes available to any business in Hampton Roads two flexible manufacturing labs fully equipped with welding stations, CNC machines, lathes, pneumatics, and numerous other industry tools for training, with the option to businesses to bring to the Center specific equipment necessary to complete thorough training.

Mobile computer labs are also available to businesses for employee training at their own facilities

Thomas Nelson Workforce Development has made a practice of customizing services available to businesses to assist with the administrative portion of training and/or educating their employees. Offering on-site services such as assistance with college applications, registration, customized curriculum for credit and career study certificates are just a few of the options available.
