Dabney S. Lancaster Community College (DSLCC) is located in
Clifton Forge, in the western part of the state, and serves the counties
of Alleghany, Bath, Botetourt (northern portion) and Rockbridge, the
cities of Buena Vista, Covington, and Lexington, and the town of Clifton
Forge.
|
DSLCC has received state and federal funding to establish a
comprehensive program and state-of-the-art lab facility for the training
of manufacturing machinery technicians. A new sawmill is in use for forestry technology students.

Responding to both demand and need in the community, DSLCC formed the
Division
of Continuing Education and Workforce Services (CEWS). Employers can
rely on the division's expertise to help meet their increasingly complex
workforce training needs.
The college provides customized training to the region’s employers,
with the majority of the training being in the areas of leadership, communications,
and computer technology training and upgrading.
|
The dominant industry sector served was manufacturing, in large part through
customized training. For example, CEWS provided a “Frontline Leadership
Training Program” to incumbent employees at the MeadWestvaco facility
in Covington, who hold positions such as foreman, supervisor, top operator
and team leader. Mirroring the company’s expressed need for a “participative”
style of leadership, the skills taught in the program focused on developing
a team environment that incorporated basic skills of planning, organizing,
managing, and controlling.
DSLCC’s primary facility, the CEWS Center, is located on the main
campus in Clifton Forge and includes state-of-the-art interactive technology.
The facility features lecture halls, a computer lab, classrooms, and training
and conference rooms. Also available is a state-of-the-art lab for the
training of manufacturing machinery technicians, teaching students the
appropriate skills for successful employment in manufacturing environments
using advanced technologies. The training can consist of employer-driven
curricula that allow students to choose the specialized topics, course(s)
and certifications most closely matched to their occupational goals.
