The Virginia Community College System, comprised of 23 community colleges, located on 40 campuses around the state, provides academic, occupational and technical training programs, many of which are designed specifically to meet the needs of nearby businesses and industries.
In the 2006-07 academic year, the community colleges awarded more than 15,500 degrees, diplomas and certificates. Increasingly, community colleges are developing transfer agreements with four-year institutions, whereby students can earn the first two years of a bachelor’s degree at a community college. Community colleges also serve more than 700 employers and more than 130,000 individuals in open enrollment and customized workforce training and services, contributing substantially to the economic development of their service regions.
