Virginia offers unparalleled transportation opportunities to get you anywhere in the world with ease. Centrally located on the U.S. East Coast, our integrated transportation system of highways, railroads, airports and seaports ensures that you can reach every one of your markets and get shipments from suppliers more efficiently.

Today's leading distributors are taking increasing advantage of Virginia's proximity to Eastern U.S. and Midwest markets. Target, Wal-Mart, The Home Depot, QVC Network, Sysco, Ford, and Advanced Auto Parts are just a few that have set up supply chain centers throughout Virginia. More than 250 distribution companies operate in Virginia accounting for more than 40% of the containerized imports at the Port of Virginia. From 2002-2006, distribution firms invested over $970 million and created over 10,600 new jobs in the Commonwealth. Virginia exported $14.10 billion of merchandise in 2006—a 15.46% increase over 2005. Centrally located on the East Coast, Virginia is within 750 miles of more than 200 million people and 301,000 manufacturing firms.

Virginia's Superior Transportation System

  • Fourteen commercial airports serve Virginia with scheduled commercial service to over 600 direct destinations around the world

  • Washington Dulles International Airport—third largest transatlantic gateway on the East Coast

Highways

  • More than 70,000 miles of interstate, primary and secondary road

  • Six major interstate routes: I-95, I-85, I-81, I-77, I-66 and I-6

Rail Service

  • Two of the nation's largest railroads—Norfolk Southern Corporation and CSX Corporation—have extensive rail infrastructure throughout the state

  • Eleven railroads operate on over 3,400 miles of railway in Virginia, of which over 3,100 miles are Class 1

Virginia's Ports

  • The Port of Virginia offers world-class shipping facilities and a schedule of more than 5,400 sailings annually to over 250 ports in 100 foreign countries.

  • This ice-free port handles more standardized containers than any other East Coast port and, due to a sandy harbor bottom that is dredged to over 50 feet in depth, is the only East Coast port capable of handling the largest container ships in the world.

  • Virginia’s Inland Port (VIP) located within a Foreign Trade zone effectively brings the benefits of the Port of Virginia 220 miles closer to U.S. markets. Five-days-a-week rail service between the VIP and the marine terminals in Hampton Roads allows direct access to the trade routes of the many international shipping lines that call on the Port of Virginia.

  • APM Terminals International B.V. recently opened a state-of-the art, $450 million terminal in Hampton Roads that doubles the Port of Virginia's cargo. The new APM terminal handles the largest container ships in Maersk’s fleet with great rail connections to major US markets.

  • The Port of Richmond enjoys direct access to the Atlantic Ocean. Two deepwater berths accommodate both ships and barges. The Port provides over 300,000 square feet of covered warehouse space, 44 acres of storage and a fumigation facility on site.
