LEADING GERMAN MEDICAL DEVICE FIRM SELECTS LOUDOUN COUNTY FOR U.S. HEADQUARTERS
-Governor Warner welcomes WaveLight Laser Incorporated to Northern Virginia-

RICHMOND - Governor Mark R. Warner today announced that WaveLight Laser Technologie AG of Erlangen, Germany has selected Loudoun County for its U.S. headquarters. Through a $5 million investment, the company will create 30 new jobs. Virginia successfully competed with Illinois and Maryland for the project.

“I am pleased to welcome another international firm to the Commonwealth,” said Governor Warner. “WaveLight is a valuable addition to the business climate of Loudoun County and Northern Virginia. The Commonwealth continues to maintain strong business partnerships with German companies through the Virginia Economic Development Partnership’s Frankfurt office.”

WaveLight Laser Technologie AG, listed on the Prime Standard since January 2003, develops, produces and markets laser systems in the fields of ophthalmology, aesthetic surgery, urology and industrial applications. WaveLight’s market success is based on its innovative laser systems that are technology leaders in their areas of application. Its broad-based sales network features its own sales channels and strategic partners. In October 2003, WaveLight received FDA approval to market its ALLEGRETTO WAVE™ excimer laser system in the U.S. for use in LASIK surgery procedures. “With our decision to locate our U.S. headquarters in Virginia, we have chosen the best possible location. Both the transportation links and the growth opportunities have convinced us that the location we have chosen is the ideal starting point for our U.S. market entry, and we will manage all U.S. activities from here in future. Overall, we are expecting to strengthen our market position as a high-tech laser manufacturer in the field of medical technology – especially in the United States,” said Max Reindl, CEO of WaveLight Laser Technologie AG.

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership and the Loudoun County Department of Economic Development assisted WaveLight Laser Technologie AG with its decision. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide workforce training services.

“Loudoun County is delighted to welcome WaveLight’s U.S. Headquarters,” said Loudoun County Board Chairman Scott York. “Loudoun has a business-friendly environment and the addition of WaveLight further diversifies our business base.”
