Rockbridge County - Governor Jim Gilmore today announced the decision by SpanDeck Inc. to locate a new manufacturing facility in Tazewell County, creating up to 125 new jobs with a $2.5 million investment. SpanDeck is a leading manufacturer of hydraulic, telescopic-boom, crawler cranes used in a variety of industries. Virginia successfully competed with Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida for the investment.
"I am pleased that SpanDeck Inc. has recognized Virginia's positive assets as an ideal business location," said Governor Gilmore. "The people of Tazewell County are skilled and ready to work for this respected company. By locating in an Enterprise Zone, SpanDeck will benefit from additional tax credits as they construct their new facility."
Headquartered in Franklin, Tennessee, SpanDeck has been a world leader in the crane manufacturing business for 20 years. Major national railroads and railroad contractors use the company's truck cranes for a variety of tasks including derailment cleanup and yard maintenance work. Private construction companies, public utilities and public works contractors also make up SpanDeck's international customer base. SpanDeck will hire managers, welders, machinists, painters, truck drivers, and administrative assistants at the Tazewell County facility scheduled to open in the summer of 1999.
"After a long and thoughtful process, Virginia offered us the best opportunity for our company's growth and profitability," said William E. Mitchell, Chairman and CEO of SpanDeck. "The cooperation we received from Tazewell County was outstanding. This location will play an integral role in SpanDeck's future."
The Virginia Economic Development Partnership, the Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority and Tazewell County assisted the company with its decision. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide workforce training services.
