Governor Gilmore Announces 200 Jobs for Caroline County
-- Value City Furniture to invest $18.5 million for regional distribution center - -

Caroline County - Governor Jim Gilmore today announced the decision by Value City Furniture to locate an $18.5 million distribution center in Caroline County. Virginia successfully competed with locations in Maryland for the investment.

"Virginia's strategic East Coast location and committed workforce has helped Caroline County attract this major corporate facility," said Governor Gilmore. "I am thrilled to announce a project of this size for a county in need of more quality jobs. I am certain Value City will become a prized corporate citizen in the Commonwealth."

Value City Furniture is a subsidiary Schottenstein Stores Corporation, based in Columbus, Ohio. The parent company and its subsidiaries operate 93 full-line department stores and 66 furniture stores principally serving the Midwestern and eastern United States. Value City Department Stores are currently located in Newport News and Virginia Beach. The distribution center will be located in a new 350,000-square foot building in the Carmel Church Business Centre. The center will help spur the creation of Value City Furniture retail stores throughout Virginia. The average salary at the Caroline County facility are estimated to range from $22,000 to $25,000.

"We believe the new Value City Furniture distribution center will be a significant economic stimulus for Caroline County and the surrounding areas," said David Thompson, President of Value City Furniture. "The project should result in the creation of a substantial number of quality jobs and will also serve as a foundation in building the necessary infrastructure for Value City Furniture to increase our presence in Virginia and the entire southeastern United States."

Governor Gilmore approved a grant from the Governor's Opportunity Fund worth $350,000 to assist the county with site preparation. The Virginia Economic Development Partnership and Caroline County assisted the company with its decision.
